Learning lots from selling Lollipops

On the 22nd February 2013, the 5th Year LCVP class participated in Lollipop Day in aid of Oesophageal Cancer. We had to complete an Action Plan after our trip out because as part of LCVP we had to plan the whole day for ourselves and the Transition Year classes.

We met in the hall and gave out T-shirts and caps to the students and then we got on the bus. We had great craic on the bus with our class and when we got to town we went to collect our buckets and stickers and lollipops in Powerscourt Centre. We went to our designated areas around the city center and started to collect and try to raise awareness for the charity.

We took turns on going for lunch and really enjoyed getting to talk to people and experience their generosity and willingness to support.

Some of the girls even bumped into Bressie and James Sheridan from The Voice of Ireland! His guitar playing and singing really entertained the girls who were on Grafton Street selling Lollipops!

After we were finished collecting, we returned our buckets to the Center and went home on the bus. The ladies in charge of the Organisation of Collection were very happy with our contribution to the organisation.

Overall we really enjoyed our day and hope that we will be able to volunteer for a Voluntary Organisation again during our time in LCVP! For more information on Oesophageal Cancer visit: www.lollipopday.ie or www.facebook.com/lollipopday

Planning for Lollipop Day 2013

This year St. Wolstan’s 5th Year L.C.V.P class are supporting Oesophageal  Cancer by taking part in Lollipop Day on the 22nd March 2013. We arranged ourselves into groups of three and four and will be raising as much money as possible by selling badges and lollipops for €2 each in aid of Oesophageal  Cancer.

At the moment we are organising the transportation for the journey into Dublin City Centre where we will be assigned to different locations around the city. Transition Year students will also take part in this event in raising money for the charity.

It will be an enjoyable day for all and we are really looking forward to it!

A trip to Caffrey's Chocolate Warehouse

Alisha and Abigael of 5th Year LCVP wrote this report about the recent LCVP trip to Caffreys Chocolate Warehouse.

"Our LCVP Class planned to go to Caffrey's Chocolate Warehouse as part of our LCVP course. After our trip we would complete a Summary Report about it. All of the 5th and 6th years LCVP students met up in the school reception and the roll was called. All the students and two teachers got on the bus and we began our journey.

We had great fun all together on the bus journey by singing and having great chats. At around 11am we reached Caffrey's Chocolate Warehouse, in Walkinstown. We waited in the reception area for a roll call. There was Willy Wonka music playing in the background and the scene was beautiful.

Everyone was so excited, we wanted to eat everything. We were advised to put our bags on the shelves while we went for our tour.

We were led into a room with a big TV and were greeted by our speaker Mary. She showed us a DVD on how chocolate is produced. None of us realised there was that much effort put in to making chocolate! Our speaker passed around a massive bar of chocolate for us all to feel the weight of it, and it was really, really heavy! We wanted to take it home with us, but we were told it was very plain and bitter. After the DVD we were given time to ask questions. The speaker answered all of our questions.

We were taken to the factory, and beside it was an exhibit of Umpa Lumpa's and chocolate fountains. It was almost like we were in the Willie Wonka movie. After this we were shown a short demonstration of how chocolate Easter eggs were made and how the eggs are decorated.

We were then allowed to decorate our own chocolate and we all found this really fun and enjoyed it. Mrs Leahy took some lovely photos of us all having fun.

Overall it was a great experience and we all grew closer as a class. We will all remember our trip to Caffrey's Chocolate Warehouse and all the chocolates we decorated. We would recommend any LCVP class to visit the Chocolate Warehouse as we learnt a lot about how a large business operates."

Well done Alisha and Abigael.

Planning to swim a mile .....smiling!

Orlaith is part of a group working on planning a trip to the National Aquatic Centre in March. Read what she has to say about the project so far.

"As part of our L.C.V.P we are planning to go on a trip to the National Aquatic Centre in Blachardstown to take part in the Ian Daly Swim a Mile With a Smile event. This is organised by a local voluntary organisation; it is an annual event that is aimed at supporting children who have been diagnosed with cancer and their families.
This activity fits in with our L.C.V.P as it is a local voluntary organisation, and we will be able to complete an action plan about the project. At the moment we are busy planning the trip. The first thing we had to was ask our principal if we could participate in the swim and if the co-ordinator of the event, Mr Brian Daly, could come in and give us information about it and why it was set up. We also want to know where the money we will be raising will be going.

We wrote a letter to our principal asking for permission and she said yes. Next we had to write up parental permission slips to get signed. Then we had to sort transport to Blachardstown so we e-mailed two bus companies to get quotes. We will probably book the cheapest one.
We still have a lot more to plan for and next we need to write up our Action Plans for the trip.

To find out more about the Ian Daly Swim a Mile With a Smile go to their website here. Why not take part in the swim yourself, or sponsor one of the LCVP class?"

A visit from Habitat for Humanity.

The 5th Year LCVP class have been studying voluntary organisations and the benefits they bring to the community. To help us learn more and to practice our team and organisational skills, we recently invited a speaker from Habitat for Humanity Ireland to speak to us about the work they do as an International voluntary organisation.

Niamh spoke to us about the organisation and also about what she gained as a volunteer in Ghana where she helped build two houses with a team of students in 2010.

Below is Niamh's presentation. It is good to have a copy of the presentation as it will help us when we are writing our Summary Report on teh visit.

Niamh brought this edition of InTuition - a CSPE booklet that had a recent spotlight on Habitat for Humanity on October 2nd - World Habitat Day.

This will add to what we learnt when we had a volunteer from a local organisation, Celbridge Youth Cafe, recently visit to talk to us.

Well done to the 5th Year LCVP class for organising the visit.

Celbridge Amenity Group.

Alisha sent in this report on Celbridge Amenity Group.

Celbridge Amenity Group

The Celbridge Amenity Group was formed several years ago when there was a lot of discussion in the county and country about developing playgrounds in communities around Ireland. There were some communities who already had playgrounds, Dublin 6, Lucan, Dunlaoire, etc.But some also did not including Lexlip,Celbridge and Maynooth.

They met to help the Kildare County Council Parks and Recreation Department. The Kildare County Council wanted local advice from residents of each community regarding detailed location and features of a new playground (fencing, equipment, access, lighting, etc). The group would meet in local pubs for their discussions, but would not drink alcohol at these meetings!

They would advertise in the local newspapers, that they wanted people to join in forming a committee.

They would meet once per fortnight, and elected officers to serve as chairperson, and secretary.

They  had a team of about 8 people which included:

·         Pat Byrne (from Pat Byrne Family Butchers),

·         Bill Eiffe, from Insight Theatre Company

·         Sharon MacDonogh, Eircom

·         Roger Murphy, Celbridge Town Football Club

Some of these were interested in a playground and others where interested in a new community theatre facility.

The group contacted the Geography Department of NUIM , who designed and conducted a student –run door-to-door survey to ask local residents what they wanted for the community

They did not have or need money. The Kildare County Council had a budget for building the playground, which covered it.
They kept meeting and stayed together as the Celbridge Amenity Group until the playground was built even though they didn’t just help Celbridge but other communities too. The playground was built on the Kildare County Council open green area near Aghards School and is still there today.

Then they stopped meeting and went back to their normal lives.
A spokesman for the group said he could imagine reforming if the Kildare County Council or someone wanted to build a new playground or new amenity in the council.
